Taking Care of Your Braces on Vacation

by | Sep 1, 2021 | Orthodontics

Summer is the perfect time to travel because of the great weather and time off from school, but if you have braces it’s important to make sure that you’re taking care of your braces on vacation so there aren’t any gaps in your treatment. Here’s what you need to know before you go if you’re traveling and have braces.

Pack All the Tools

When you travel, it’s always important to remember to pack all the things you’ll need and when you’re traveling with braces that becomes extra important. Even a short lapse in taking care of your braces on vacation can prolong your treatment time or lead to cavities, but don’t worry because we’re here to help!

As usual, the basics include a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss, but you may also want to bring a couple additional items such as mouthwash for times when there’s no water available to brush your teeth and a pack of dental picks to remove those pesky food particles that are prone to get stuck in braces.

Maintain Your Routine

Vacations can get busy, so it’s important to continue to set aside the time you normally do for yourself to take good care of your braces and teeth. This may mean that you’ll need to get up a few minutes early or invest a bit of extra time before bed to brush and floss your teeth and braces well, but the results will pay off in the long run when your braces come off, and you have a sparkling white smile to show off!

See Your Orthodontist Before You Go

Another important tip for taking care of your braces on vacation is to see your orthodontist as close as possible to your departure date. Seeing your orthodontist before you go can give them the opportunity to spot any loose wires or adjustments that may be needed, so there’s less to worry about and you can focus on simply enjoying your vacation. It will also provide your braces with a fresh adjustment in case your plans get extended to help ensure you won’t be delaying your treatment schedule or need to see an orthodontist while away from home.

When to See an Orthodontist While on Your Trip

Emergencies are unfortunate, but they do happen to the best of us. So how do you know when you need to see an orthodontist and when it’s ok to wait until you get home? The best answer is to call your orthodontist and ask! Explain to them what happened and your travel plans and they will be able to advise you on the best course of action to help you not lose time from your treatment or your well-earned vacation.
